When my dad played a board game with me for the first time in over 10 years it felt special. We do a lot of other things together but for some reason playing the game together felt unique. It wasn’t 40 minutes of streaming, social media, or eating out. It was 40 minutes of talking, laughing, and cheering.

I believe we all need more of this in our lives. Making memories isn’t limited to board games, of course, but that’s where I'm going to make an impact.

If we take a moment and think about where we spend most of our time it’s easy to see some problems. We all know about them. We spend too much time streaming, too much time on social media, and too much time, and money, eating out. We should spend that time around the kitchen table talking, laughing, and cheering instead. We should be with with our family and friends in the same room, seeing each other's faces.

Do you want that in your life? Do you want to see that happen for more people in the world?

What Boat Are You In?

It's easy to say that there are plenty of ways to accomplish the task of having a healthier social life by going to the park, going to the gym, or by being a part of some sort of community group. If you're more inclined to spend your social hobby time bowling or rock climbing then you should continue pursuing that and bringing your friends along. Those are great hobbies.

However, if you get excited by spending your free time outwitting your friends, exploring new worlds, and drawing cards then you and I are alike. We should be introducing our families to the joy of card advantage and how to mitigate variance. Let's entice more of our friends to join us for epic battles that are decided by the roll of dice.

Imagine life where

  • Instead of dreading Mondays you look forward to a game night
  • Friends compete face to face instead in front of screens
  • A date night is something besides dinner and a movie
  • Your kids look forward to playing with you after school
  • Problem solving in games leads to solving problems in life
  • Memories are made and friendships grow

Playing board games may or may not change the world but it will do two things at least. It will create positive connections with the people in our lives that matter and memories that will last. Let's not only bring that into our lives, but into the lives of others as well.

It’s a future that I’m marching towards. Will you march with me?
